Congress Passes Budget Reconciliation Bill

Hawai‘i Foodbank Statement on Congress Passing Budget Reconciliation Legislation
The passage of the budget reconciliation bill is a serious blow to our community. It comes at a time when hunger remains widespread across Hawai‘i, and the need for food assistance is already far beyond what many organizations can manage alone.
This legislation includes major cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Hawai’i, reducing critical support for families, children, kūpuna, veterans, people with disabilities and many others who depend on these benefits to access basic nutrition. The consequences will be far-reaching.
“We cannot do this alone. Addressing food insecurity must be a shared responsibility involving government, businesses, community organizations and individuals.”
Organizations like Hawai‘i Foodbank will face significant pressure to respond to the increased demand. The truth is, we may not be able to meet that demand. We are already stretched, and cuts of this scale could overwhelm even the strongest safety nets.
We intend to continue working with partners to keep food flowing to those who need it and to advocate for stronger, long-term solutions. But we cannot do this alone. Addressing food insecurity must be a shared responsibility involving government, businesses, community organizations and individuals.
