SUMMER

MEALS

Fuel our keiki, feed our future!

Typically, during the school year, keiki can access meals at school; however, during the summer, meal availability decreases, leading to a summer hunger gap. Across Oʻahu and Kaua’i, Hawaiʻi Foodbank works with our community partners to help fill the gap by providing access to nutritious food at convenient neighborhood sites, including parks and schools.

Hawaiʻi Foodbank helps fuel our keiki all summer long through programs like Kaukau 4 Keiki, and Feeding Our Future.

Breakfast and lunch are available to any child who visits a participating meal distribution site, while others require enrolment in a summer program.

These summer meals help ensure children have access to the nutrition they need to stay healthy, active and focused on learning throughout the school break.

Nourishing our Keiki

At Hawaiʻi Foodbank, our mission is to nourish our ʻohana today while working to end hunger tomorrow. Addressing childhood hunger is about more than providing food. It is about giving keiki the foundation they need to succeed in school, maintain their health and reach their full potential.

That is why Hawaiʻi Foodbank created Food 4 Keiki, a suite of programs designed to provide nutritious food and support the health and well-being of children facing hunger throughout Hawaiʻi.

Kaukau 4 keiki

Summer Meals

In partnership with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education’s (HIDOE) Hawaiʻi Child Nutrition Programs, Kaukau 4 Keiki is a summer meal box program that provides nutritious meals to children across Hawaiʻi during the summer break. Kaukau 4 Keiki provides keiki with nutritious meal boxes filled with groceries to prepare seven days of breakfast and lunch for one child — including shelf-stable fruits and vegetables, proteins, starches, milk, fresh produce, bread and more.
Kaukau 4 Keiki is available in rural communities where students may not be able to get to a summer meal location each day for breakfast and lunch.
Nearly 60% of students enrolled in public and charter schools are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
For many children, these meals are a vital source of nutrition.
Each weekday, children receive a nutritious, shelf-stable meal that includes protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and milk.
In Hawaiʻi, nearly 1 in 3 keiki may not know where their next meal will come from.
For more than 100,000 children across the state, getting the nutrition they need to learn, grow and thrive can be a daily challenge.
Feeding
our Future

Feeding Our Future provides nutritious meals to students enrolled in summer programs during the school break. Students typically receive a daily hot lunch that includes protein, grains, vegetables, fruit and milk. On days when students participate in field trips, cold meals such as sandwiches are provided.

Feeding Our Future plays a critical role in reducing childhood hunger and supporting families with limited financial resources.
By ensuring children have consistent access to nutritious food throughout the summer, the program helps them stay healthy, active and ready to learn.
