Kaukau 4 Keiki: Fueling Hawaiʻi’s Next Generation All Summer Long

During the school year, thousands of Hawai‘i’s keiki rely on free or reduced-price school meals for the nutritious breakfasts and lunches they need to learn and thrive. When summer break begins, many families lose access to that critical source of food, placing added pressure on household budgets already stretched by Hawaiʻi’s high cost of living.

With 34% of Hawai‘i’s keiki experiencing food insecurity, summer meal programs play a vital role in helping families bridge the gap and ensure children and teens have the nourishment they need to stay healthy, active, and ready to grow. One of those programs is Kaukau 4 Keiki.

This summer, in partnership with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education’s Hawaiʻi Child Nutrition Programs, Hawaiʻi Foodbank provides Kaukau 4 Keiki summer meal boxes at 10 distribution sites across Oʻahu.

Each eligible child receives a weekly box containing seven days’ worth of breakfast and lunch ingredients, along with fresh local produce, bread and more.

“We are middle-income, so we don’t qualify for anything else. Mahalo for keeping our keiki fed this summer!” – Kaukau 4 Keiki Parent, Waipahu

One Waipahu family shared some recipes made with their Kaukau 4 Keiki items, including a vegetarian lasagna with fresh eggplant and zucchini, and simple tuna hand rolls.

“I shop on a budget and buy goods with a 50% off sticker, but have primarily used goods from [Kaukau 4 Keiki]. I’m a single-income mom of two teenage boys, so we’re grateful for the food. We are middle-income, so we don’t qualify for anything else. Mahalo for keeping our keiki fed this summer!” shared one parent.

Thanks to programs like Kaukau 4 Keiki, healthy and nutritious food can remain within reach all summer – allowing our keiki to grow, play and thrive without having to worry about when they’ll get their next meal.

To submit a recipe or photos of the meals you make from Kaukau 4 Keiki, send an email to food4keiki@hawaiifoodbank.org — we’d love to hear from you!
