The State of Food Insecurity in Hawai‘i

The State of Food Insecurity in Hawai‘i is the first report of its kind to comprehensively evaluate food insecurity in Hawai‘i using the full United States Household Food Security Survey Module (US HFSSM), the most validated food security measurement tool applied in population studies. The report provides critical insights for programs and policies seeking to improve food security. Overall, the findings suggest that, at 30%, food insecurity in Hawai‘i is a significant issue that will require targeted, collaborative and comprehensive solutions from all of us in the community

Maui Wilfires: Response and Recovery

On Aug. 8. 2023, unprecedented and devastating wildfires tore through Maui — creating a staggering loss of life and homes. Over 2,000 structures were destroyed, and more than 12,000 people were displaced. As Maui faced both an immediate emergency and a long road to recovery, food banks in Hawai‘i and across the United States stepped up to make sure Maui Food Bank was not alone.

In the first few months, Hawai‘i Foodbank coordinated and shipped 75 containers of food and supplies from O‘ahu to Maui while also providing regular on-the-ground staff support. In total, Hawai‘i Foodbank raised over $3 million to support its partners at Maui Food Bank and helped provide more than 2.3 million pounds of food and emergency supplies for the Maui relief efforts.
